Why Cook Well: Of Good Food and Bourdain’s Knife
(An essay for Anthony Bourdain’s Medium Raw! Challenge.)
It is my dream of being in a chef’s uniform that drives me to cook better. I don’t want to sound like a hardcore feminist but one of the reasons why I want to cook well is to prove that women can, well, cook well! That apart from homecooking, I can excel and one day go up the ranks in a professional kitchen — a feat that statistically more men than women have accomplished. I want to cook well because I want to be a chef, a successful female chef!
BUT does moving up from being dishwasher girl to being the prep slave mean you are a step closer to cooking good food? Does professional ranking make you a good cook?
